Hannah’s unbirthday

Hannah was sad.

Even though it was summer the sun hadn’t been out in Edinburgh and she hadn’t been able to paddle in her little pool in the garden because it was always cloudy and cool.

Even Roger was sad. He liked to climb trees but he didn’t like getting his lovely, shiny, black fur wet and when it rained that’s what happened!

He also liked to sleep under the hedge in the back garden but he didn’t like little drops of water falling on him.

Hannah’s little brother, Arun, didn’t get out in the garden either because the naughty clouds hid the sun and when that happened his tiny toes got cold and then he’d scream and scream.

Then Mummy had an idea!

“I know what we’ll do, Hannah,” she said. “It’s not your birthday until 11th December but why don’t we have an unbirthday party tomorrow?”

“What’s that?” asked Hannah, puzzled.

“It’s any day that isn’t your birthday,” explained Mummy.

“Yes!  Yes, please,” exclaimed Hannah, clapping her hands.

There was lots of organising to do to get things ready for the party.

First Mummy said they had to decide who to invite.

“Well, definitely granny and granddad,” Hannah said.

Hannah thought about her friends at the nursery, too. There was Tabitha and Ella and Daniel and, of course, she couldn’t forget Eva.

Mummy found the telephone numbers of their mummies and invited them to Hannah’s unbirthday party the next day.

That was the first job done.

“What should we do next?” Hannah asked.

“Well”, said Mummy, “We’ll have to think what we’ll give them to eat and drink.”

Mummy got out a piece of paper and began to write a shopping list.

“Lots of juice,” said Hannah.

“All right,” said Mummy.   “That’s the first thing on the shopping list.

“I think we should make sandwiches,” said Mummy.

“May I have a cake, please?” asked Hannah – being very polite because she wanted to show what a good girl she could be.

“A cake,” replied Mummy. “Of  course. We can’t have an unbirthday party without a cake, can we?”

“Will it have candles on it?” asked Hannah.

“Of course,” said Mummy. “2 whole candles and half of one. Because that’s how old you are now.”

Hannah was getting very excited.

“And,” said Mummy, “I think we should have party hats, balloons and streamers.”

“Yippee!” exclaimed Hannah.

Then Mummy said that they’d have to go to the supermarket to buy the party things. Usually Hannah didn’t like shopping in the supermarket but this was different.

Without a single complaint  Hannah went with mummy and soon their trolley was full of exciting party things.

That night Hannah could hardly get to sleep she was so excited about her party the next day but she didn’t cry or get out of bed because, once again, she wanted to show Mummy and Daddy what a good girl she could be.

The next morning Mummy woke her up, singing,

“A very happy unbirthday to you, to you…”

and Hannah remembered about her special day and the party she’d be having in the afternoon.

Before she knew it, it was 2 o’clock and she heard the first knock at the door.

It was granny and granddad!

“Happy unbirthday, Hannah” they said and each gave her a big hug and a kiss.

No sooner had they arrived than Tabitha and her mum came to the door.

“Knock, knock! Ring, Ring!”

Before long everyone had arrived and the party could start.

They played “Ring a Ring a Rosie”, “Pass the parcel” and had fun chasing each other in the garden .

Even Mr Sunshine put his hat on and came out to play at Hannah’s party.

After a while, Mummy called everyone into the garden to eat the party food. It was lovely and the juice was just what they all needed to cool down.

Then Mummy called Hannah over to her side and asked her to blow out the candles on her cake!

Hannah closed her eyes and made a wish, then she took a deep breath, and blew as hard as she could.

All the candles went out and everyone cheered as loudly as they could.

“Hurray! Hurray!” they shouted.

Soon it was time for everyone to go home. They’d had a wonderful, happy time helping Hannah to celebrate her unbirthday.

That night, in her bedroom as Mummy was putting Hannah to bed she said, “Thank you, Mummy for giving me the happiest, best unbirthday party ever!”

Then, because she was so tired, she fell asleep.
