Storybooks

It’s always nice to get a book for a birthday or Christmas but how much more thrilling if the story is about you: you’re the hero or heroine of the tale.

Whether it’s a story for a toddler, like this excerpt for a story I wrote for a wee girl in my family about her first visit to the beach –

Hannah, granny and granddad waved ‘bye ‘bye to mummy who was staying at home to look after Arun.

Hannah thought that granddad would drive to the supermarket but he didn’t. Instead they drove for a long time.

Hannah was puzzled.

She kept asking, “When will we get there?”

Granny just smiled!

At last granddad parked the car in a place Hannah had never been before.

“Where are we, granny?” asked Hannah.

“We’re in Portobello and we’re going to the beach,” replied granny.

They all went into a little shop which had all sorts of exciting things hanging outside of it – brightly coloured buckets and spades, of all different sizes, fishing rods, goggles and big, round brightly coloured balls.

This was the big secret!

Granddad bought a lovely bucket decorated with shells and a little spade.

Hannah, granny and granddad went down the street, crossed the pavement and there, in front of Hannah was the beach!

Granddad lifted Hannah down from the pavement very carefully and Hannah’s toes touched the sand for the first time ever!

It’ll be a lifetime’s keepsake.

I’d speak to you to learn about the wee one and write a story about him or her doing something they like doing or always wanted to do.

Of course grown ups can be heroes or heroines, too. Again, I’d ask for details of the person, his or her likes or dislikes and then you would choose the genre: should it be a romance, a comedy or a grisly murder?

Each plotline would be individually tailored to your hero or heroine. As far as possible, I’d fit in the location of your choice, too, and if you’d like, include photographs. It could be as long or short as you’d like but 2,000-3,000 is a good length for an adult story whereas perhaps 1,000 words is long enough for a wee tiddly one.

You will choose whether it should have a hard or soft cover and, of course, you’ll select the bindings from a catalogue which I’ll provide.

So give a Storybook with a difference!
