How does it work?
Congratulations! You’ve just taken the first step to giving one lucky person the gift of a life time – a “Your Story biography”.
The Book
At all stages of the writing process you will make the decisions. I need one person who will be my contact. This may be you or someone else. All my dealings will be with that one person so he or she should have the approval of the family or group to liaise with me on their behalf, and will sign the contract.
Tell me who to interview and I will speak to them face to face, by phone, through Skype, by e-mail, or they can put their memories in letters or on cds.
You will choose the photographs to be included and they can be of people, places or pets or even things, e.g. cars, etc. important in the life of the “celebrity”.
You will have 3 opportunities to check the progress of the book:
- Once I’ve collected all of the memories, I will write them up and you can check them for accuracy.
- Once I’ve collected the photographs, I will copy them for you to check.
- Finally I will put together the memories, which have been checked by you and the photographs which have been selected by you and this will form the final draft. This will be your last opportunity to check the story before it goes to print.
- At each of the above stages, I will ask you to sign a declaration that you are satisfied with the work I have done and it will be legally binding.
The printing
- It will probably run to 50+ pages although it could be longer or shorter, if necessary.
- You decide which photographs should be included.
- You decide whether to have the photographs inserted into the text, kept together in separate pages or a combination of the two.
The binding
- The De Luxe model will be professionally printed, a hard back and hand bound.
- The Regular model may or may not be professionally printed, will be a paper back and either glued or stapled.
Presentation
I am in touch with a calligrapher who can write a dedication and make it look just beautiful! The book will be professionally wrapped so that when you hand it over the sheer quality of your gift will be obvious.
Copyright
I retain the copyright of the contents of the book so you may not copy it, in its entirety or in part. If you want copies of the book, whether in print or in computer software, you must come to me.
Timing
6-8 weeks. 4-6 weeks to do the interviews and make the checks. A week to do the printing and another week to do the binding.
It’ll be something to look at over and over again and pass on to future generations.
Costs
The cost of the finished article will largely depend on the cost of production, i.e. the quality of the paper, printing and binding and the length of time I work on the biography.
I charge £50.OO per hour which will include any research required, getting in touch with and interviewing friends and family, and any travelling to interviews that I have to do.
To cut down on travelling time I recommend that I speak to those people who live far from Perth via Skype which can be downloaded, free, from the internet. This way, even though friends live on the other side of the world I can both see and hear them and the calls are free, too!
Extras
I will be happy to provide extra copies of the books, either in hard or soft back. The price for this will depend on the number of extra copies requested.
I will be happy to read the story onto a cd-rom for any visually impaired friends or relatives – or even if the subject of the book would like to listen to it in the car!
