My Story - Lovina Roe
Harvest. A time to gather in the fruits of the summer. Isn’t it time you harvested the story of someone you love?
I started off my working life as a journalist with D. C. Thomson in Dundee, becoming “Priscilla”, the Woman’s Page Editor of “The Sunday Post”, when I was 21. I then moved into public relations, first with The Scottish Union of Students (Oh that was fun! Lobbying MPs, changing the world – or so we all thought) then The Scottish Gas Board (Much more grown up! I started to earn money!) before getting married and having a family.
Moving on from my divorce, I wanted to bring up my daughter myself so I decided to become a teacher to be at home when she was at home – and also, I’ve always loved and respected young people. First I went to Edinburgh University to study English Language and Literature, graduating with an MA followed by a Dip. Ed. from Moray House. The next many years were spent joyfully, exhaustingly and stimulatingly at Perth Grammar School teaching English to a multitude of youngsters.
Recently, a chance meeting with an ex-51st Highland Division comrade of an uncle who was captured at St. Valery during the 2nd World War, inspired me to write his biography. Writing it, sometimes I laughed, sometimes I cried but it was a seminal time in my life. I realised that there are thousands and thousands of “every day heroes” in the world; people with wonderful stories to tell – every couple has a love story, every anniversary celebrates something or someone unique, yet these stories lie hidden in people’s memories because they don’t have the time or confidence to tell them. How often have you said, “You should write that down” but it doesn’t happen, does it?
The idea for “Your Story” was born! To be invited to write someone’s life story is my privilege. We all have things in our family that we’d rather gloss over as well as things that we want to shout from the roof tops. The popularity of the BBC’s “Who do you think you are?” shows this, so when I am invited to share your family’s memories, I will do so with the tact and diplomacy I’ve learned through years of one to one contact with children. You can rely on me to tell your story with care, respect – and not least of all – affection.
I am a one woman business so I can guarantee a high standard of writing and production, of integrity and confidentiality – but most importantly, I can guarantee that your book will shed a beacon of light and understanding into the life of the person you want to honour, and that it will be treasured not only now, by him or her but by future generations of their family.
Let me use my expertise to harvest YOUR STORY for your loved one to cherish forever.
