Stories for Jennifer

Nanna and Barry’s mummy and daddy

Nanna and Barry live in a little village in Holland with their mummy, Jennifer and their daddy, Cass. They are just like every other little boy and girl in the village except for one thing; their daddy drives an ambulance and their mummy is a special kind of nurse who rescues people who have been badly hurt or people who are very ill.

This is what happens. Sometimes mummies and daddies are very tired on their way home from work in the evening. They get into their cars and onto the road where lots and lots of other mummies and daddies are trying to get home, too. Just like this,

Well, sometimes one daddy or mummy is in a terrible hurry, perhaps to get to the kindergarten to collect their little boy or girl and they try to push in front of the car in front.

This is when an accident can happen. One car hits another one with a big bang crash and some people in the cars are hurt.

This is where mummy Jennifer and daddy Cass spring into action.

Someone near the accident phones for help

“Quick! Send help! Someone’s been hurt!”
Guess who gets the telephone call? Yes. It’s either daddy Cass or mummy Jennifer.

Straight away they jump into an ambulance – a big car with lot of things inside to help people who have been hurt and they hurry to help. To make sure the drivers of other cars get out of the way to let the ambulance past daddy Cass presses a button and it makes a loud noise called a siren.

Mummy’s inside, pulling on her special gloves and wearing her stethoscope which will let her hear the patient’s heartbeat which sounds like, ssshhh-boom, ssshhh-boom, ssshhh-boom.

When they arrive at the accident, the patient is wrapped up in warm blankets and put on to a special bed called a stretcher and off they go to hospital!

Sometimes mummy and daddy are called to help a new baby come into the world. If the mummy lives far in the country, she might need to get help to reach the hospital.

Mummy and daddy race to the scene, wrap up the new mummy in warm blankets and drive to the hospital as fast as they can.

And if she is very lucky mummy can go back to the hospital to see the mummy and the new baby.  Mummy loves those days.

So when other mummies and daddies collect their little boys and girls from the kindergarten they will have spent the day in an office or working in fields or at school as teachers, like Auntie Lovina.

But Nanna and Barry’s mummy and daddy might have rescued someone who needed help. Or… they might have stayed by the telephone waiting for a call and drinking coffee! They never know what each day will bring!
