Hannah’s wonderful glasses
One morning Hannah woke up early. Even though her curtains were closed, the sun was streaming in through the window.
Hannah slipped quietly out of bed so that she didn’t waken Arun who was sleeping quietly in his cot.
She remembered what fun they’d at last night’s bed time.
After tea Hannah had gone into the garden to play when daddy called, “Hannah! Hannah banana!”
Mummy had run the bathwater and was holding Arun. Daddy took Hannah’s hand and they all went upstairs. Daddy lifted Hannah into the bath and mummy handed Arun to him. They splashed and shooshed around in the lovely warm water.
They made bubbles and daddy sang, “I’m forever blowing bubbles”!
Daddy’s very good at playing in the bath!
Hannah ran into mummy and daddy’s room calling, “Mummy! Get up! The sun’s out!”
Mummy was a bit sleepy because she had only just got to sleep after giving Arun his middle of the night feed.
“Come in beside me Hannah. It’s not time to get up just yet.”
Even though Hannah could hardly wait to start her day and get out into the sunshine she lay down beside mummy.
Even Roger was just returning home from a night’s hunting and was having a big yawn… ready to find a cosy place to snuggle down for the day.
But Hannah couldn’t settle down for long; she had to get out in the sunshine .
Mummy soon realised that Hannah was wide awake and said, “All right, Hannah. Let’s get up and have our breakfast in the garden”.
It was lovely! Hannah had her favourite cereal, Rice Crispies and some juice and mummy had a cup of tea and a piece of toast.
Daddy had already gone to work so it was just Hannah and mummy in the garden eating and listening to the birds cheeping and singing in the trees. Hannah missed daddy in the mornings but he always came home before lunch time and went to sleep for a little while.
The day got hotter and hotter and Hannah found out how very uncomfortable it was when the sun shone into her eyes.
She screwed up her eyes… but her eyes were still nipping. She put her hand over her eyes… but then her arm got tired.
“What you need,” said mummy, “is a pair of sunglasses.”
Now Hannah had sunglasses but no matter how she and mummy searched they couldn’t find them. They looked in the kitchen… but they weren’t there. They looked in the sitting room on the table, on the sofa, beside the television – they even looked under the dining table…. but they weren’t there. They looked in Hannah’s bedroom on the unit, in the wardrobe, under the bed…. but just like before, they weren’t there.
Just then the postie rang the doorbell. Hannah ran to the door and when mummy opened it
he held out a parcel saying, “This is for Miss Hannah Wallace”.
Mummy signed for the parcel and they ran into the sitting room. They sat down and mummy handed Hannah the big brown envelope.
“Be careful opening it,” said mummy, “in case you drop what’s inside and it breaks.”
Hannah didn’t want this to happen so she tore open the envelope very carefully. Inside there was something wrapped in white tissue paper and a letter.
She pulled off the tissue paper and saw…
The funniest, brightest, most fabulous sunglasses ever! They had glossy black lenses with thick, bright yellow frames. On the sides they had big, bright pink birds which mummy said were flamingos which seemed to be smiling at Hannah! In the middle of the frames, where Hannah’s nose would be there was a funny looking tree, a palm tree and at the bottom of the frames there were blue waves.
Mummy said that the glasses were meant to look like a tropical island and that was just right because this summer was very hot. In fact Edinburgh people are not used to such hot summers so the weather did seem tropical.
Then Hannah reached into the envelope again and brought out the letter. It read,
My dear Hannah,
When I saw these beautiful sunglasses I knew that the only little girl in all of Scotland who could wear them with style was YOU. So I bought them and posted them to you.
I hope you like them and I’m sure you’ll look super duper in them.
All my love,
Auntie Lovina xx
Hannah was thrilled! She put them on and ran into the garden.
They worked! She could run about and play with her toys, paddle in her pool and wave to mummy without the sun hurting her eyes.
Wasn’t it clever of Auntie Lovina to know that Hannah needed new sunglasses? Imagine her knowing that Hannah would be the prettiest girl in the nursery when she wore them to go there!
And she was right!!
