Because it isn’t only people who have birthdays, anniversaries and win awards, I have reserved a special place in my affections for Companies or Organisations with a reason to celebrate.

The wealth of this country is not generated by big multinationals alone. Oh no, it’s the small businessman or woman who provides the employment for the vast majority of British people. We’re not called “a nation of shopkeepers” for nothing.

I take my hat off to the men and women who start off in a small way, work all the hours God sends, and eventually become successful. They’re the heroes of our economy and their successes deserve to be celebrated.

Equally where would our society be without the many organisations and charities which supply a need which cannot be met by government, family or friends? Often we don’t even know such organisations exist until we need their help and then we can’t find words to praise them enough.
